Dancing Gorilla Twycross Zoo

A dancing gorilla video has gone viral with more than one million people viewing the pirouetting primate. The charming footage of the three-year-old gorilla, called Lope, was taken on a visit to Twycross Zoo in Leicestershire.

Twycross Zoo is a renowned specialist primate centre with a wide variety of monkeys and all four great ape species.  Twycross Zoo has always been famous for the breeding of primates and has recorded first UK births for thirteen different species including the bonobo, siamang, agile gibbon and woolly monkey, contributing to numerous conservation breeding programmes. The zoo’s director of life sciences Dr Charlotte Macdonald said Lope’s “dance” is evidence of him playing – an important aspect of young apes’ behaviour.

A more imaginative take on the performance is that the gorilla is mimicking the magical dancing shadowman in The Earth Emperor’s Eye. Quite simply, Lope’s Puttin’ on the Ritz! Young Sarah also has a delightful song, Who is the Monkey? which is symbolic about who is to blame for the Earth’s ecological predicament.
